About This Tool
The Center of Effort (CE) Calculator is a naval architecture tool used to determine the balance of a sailboat's rig. It calculates the geometric center of the sail plan, which is the single point where all aerodynamic forces are considered to act. The position of the CE relative to the hull's Center of Lateral Resistance (CLR) is the primary determinant of the boat's handling characteristics, such as weather helm or lee helm.

Key Concepts:

Center of Effort (CE): The geometric center of the sail area.
Center of Lateral Resistance (CLR): The pivot point of the underwater hull profile.
Lead: The distance by which the CE is ahead of the CLR, ideally 10-15% of the waterline length.
Helm Balance: The boat's tendency to turn into the wind (weather helm) or away from it (lee helm).
